The GRASP team have been busy packing workplace wellness packs to go to a number of businesses in our region to promote mental wellbeing in the workplace. These packs have been made possible by the generous donations from Tannum Crab Classic.
We were invited to cook up a storm and feed some hungry QAL workers this past week and raise some much needed and very welcomed funds for our organisitions. Thank you to Greg from Port Curtis Rotary for all of your help and for donating hire of the BBQ trailer for the events. We could not have done it with out your help, or the help of all the volunteers who pitched in. What a bunch super stars!
Thank you to everyone who entered, it was a tough decision, the winning designs will be printed on postcards and distributed at upcoming community events. The winning entries are posted below, with all of the amazing entries available to view in our gallery.
Ride 4 Lives Family Fun Day was held during suicide prevention week at Toondoon Botanic Gardens, it was great to get out there and promote awareness within the community and enjoy a car and bike show, various food stalls and mingle with some of the other great service providers on offer to Gladstone. Community engagement in the stall was excellent with heaps of brochures and merchandise distributed on the day. Kids enjoyed the colouring in station while others chated about services, gathered information and discussed the impotance of suicide prevention within the community.
We had an absolute blast as we met with every player as they teed off at the first hole. The response we had from players was so positive and supportive and many conversations around preventing suicide were had. Overall, $4000 was raised on the day, which will be used to further awareness of suicide prevention in our amazing community. A huge thank you to GEA for this donation and inviting the team along for a super fun day. GRASP would also like to thank Site Skills Training for putting on a raffle which raised even more money on the day!
On 25 July 2022, the GRASP team supported Ride 4 Lives annual Suicide Awareness Ride. This event connected communities in sharing the cause of suicide awareness. There was a great turnout of riders and GRASP were there to meet and greet, hand out resources and even play a few games!
During 2021, GRASP reached key milestones as set out in the 2021 Action Goals.
Care Packs - Care Packs were designed by GRASP to provide comfort and love to people presenting to Gladstone ED in suicidal distress. GRASP drafted a funding application and successfully received $1000 from the Port Curtis Gladstone Rotary Club to deliver care packs. Approval was sought from the Gladstone Hospital. 50 care packs were delivered to the hospital in August 2021, and another 70 were provided in December 2021. Care Packs have been well received with positive feedback from consumers and hospital staff. The Rotary Club have committed to provide ongoing funding. This will remain a key goal for GRASP to improve emergency experiences for those waiting to see a mental health clinician.
Meetings & Membership - GRASP meetings were held every month and promoted widely throughout the community. Membership continuously evolved and grew throughout 2021 with many new, passionate members joining the network bringing a broad diversity of experience and expertise.
Events - GRASP supported several community events throughout 2021 creating community awareness, providing free suicide prevention resources, and building GRASP visibility. This included R U OK Day ‘Turning the Region Yellow’ Initiative, Suicide Prevention Week Nightclub Precinct BBQ with the Chaplain Watch, the Out of the Shadows Walk, Ride4Lives Suicide Awareness Family Fun Day, Headspace Opening Day, and the Mental Health Week Mindcare Community Connection Event.
Coffee Cup Sticker Campaign - Funds raised from the Nightclub BBQ were used to promote love and awareness through coffee cup stickers across the community. During Mental Health Week 2021, 1000 coffee cup stickers were distributed across 4 local cafes including the Hospital Café. The ‘You are Loved’ stickers delivered a positive message to the community. Positive feedback was received from the community and café staff. To continue the positive ‘You are Loved’ message and reach those in need during Christmas, a further 300 stickers were purchased and distributed by the Gladstone Food Centre on crisis food hampers.
Members Polo Shirts - During 2021, GRASP designed and ordered their own unique group polo shirts. Shirts have been worn at all community events to raise awareness of suicide and increase GRASP visibility and profile.
Social Media Presence - GRASP continues to improve social media presence. Facebook and Instagram were utilised in 2021 to share activities during Suicide Prevention Week and Mental Health Week.
Suicide Prevention Training & Workshops - GRASP actively supported several training courses held in Gladstone throughout 2021 including SafeTalk, ASIST, Mental Health First Aid, Standby Pathways to Care and What Do I Say, What Do I Do Bereavement course.
